Living near Westinghouse College Prep
The blocks around George Westinghouse College Prep sit at the meeting point of Humboldt Park and East Garfield Park, a classic West Side pocket built along Chicago's grand landscaped boulevards. You will find brick two-flats, vintage greystones, and rehabbed single-family homes lining streets that lead straight into Humboldt Park itself, one of the city's largest green spaces with its lagoon, fieldhouse, and summer festivals. The Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the country's most impressive glasshouse gardens, is only minutes away.
Getting downtown is simple from here. The CTA Green Line runs nearby, and several bus routes tie the area into the wider city grid, so commuters and students alike have real options. Housing along these boulevards offers character and space that is increasingly hard to find closer to the Loop, and buyers are drawn by the architecture, the parks, and the sense of a neighborhood with deep roots and room to grow.

The school
George Westinghouse College Prep traces its roots to Westinghouse Area Vocational High School, which opened for the 1967 school year in a converted Bunte Brothers candy factory and graduated its first class in 1968. For decades the school was known across the west side as a vocational program and a basketball powerhouse. In 2009 Chicago Public Schools opened a new 106.5 million dollar facility at 3223 West Franklin Boulevard, relaunching the school as George Westinghouse College Prep, a selective-enrollment college preparatory high school. The original factory building was demolished and its footprint became the school's football field. Today the school serves grades 9 through 12 and is named for American engineer and entrepreneur George Westinghouse.
George Westinghouse College Prep is one of Chicago Public Schools' selective-enrollment high schools, admitting students through the district's GoCPS process. It offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum along with career and technical education pathways.
Westinghouse competes in the Chicago Public League as the Warriors. The 2001 to 2002 boys basketball team finished 30-5 under coach Chris Head and won the IHSA Class AA state championship, the school's marquee athletic achievement.
