@sew.mineLiving near Stevenson HS
Living in the Stevenson High School area means settling into some of the most established and sought-after suburbs in Chicago's north and northwest collar. The school draws from Lincolnshire, Long Grove, Prairie View, and large parts of Buffalo Grove, and the housing reflects that range. You will find tidy single-family subdivisions and townhome communities across Buffalo Grove, leafy custom-built homes on larger wooded lots near Lincolnshire and along the Des Plaines River corridor, and quieter, more rural-feeling estate properties out toward Long Grove. Buffalo Grove sits about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, so it offers true suburban scale with the conveniences to match.
Commuters have real options. The Buffalo Grove and Prairie View stations sit on Metra's North Central Service, giving riders a one-seat ride toward Chicago, and Illinois Route 22, known locally as Half Day Road, is the main east-west artery running right past Lincolnshire. For weekends, the Des Plaines River Trail and the Half Day Forest Preserve put miles of hiking, biking, and fishing within reach, while historic downtown Long Grove offers cobblestone walks, gardens, and shops set in a preserved nineteenth-century village.
For buyers, the through-line is the schools. Stevenson's national reputation, five Blue Ribbon awards, and consistent top rankings make this attendance area one of the strongest school-driven housing markets in the region, and that reputation is a steady driver of value across every price point from first townhome to custom estate. Shopping and dining are close at hand too, with Westfield Hawthorn in nearby Vernon Hills and the retail corridors of Deerfield and Vernon Hills serving the whole area.

The school
Adlai E. Stevenson High School opened in September 1965 with 467 students and 31 teachers, named for Adlai E. Stevenson II, the 31st Governor of Illinois. Much of the original furniture had been mistakenly shipped to Prairie View, Texas instead of Prairie View, Illinois, leaving the new school short on desks and a stocked library on day one. The school's national reputation was forged in the 1980s and 1990s under principal and later superintendent Richard DuFour, who built Stevenson into the leading model for the Professional Learning Community framework. Stevenson is one of the only high schools in the country to receive the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon award five times.
Stevenson has repeatedly been named among America's best public high schools by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek, and was the top-ranked open-enrollment public high school in Illinois in U.S. News rankings in 2014, 2015, and 2021. For the class of 2016, 99.9% of graduates went on to college, with 360 students named Illinois State Scholars and 32 National Merit Semifinalists. The school was also named a National School of Distinction in Arts Education by the Kennedy Center.
The Stevenson Patriots compete in the North Suburban Conference and are a member of the IHSA, with many nationally ranked teams. The school made state history when its football and boys' basketball teams both won IHSA state titles in the same 2014-15 school year, the basketball championship coming with future NBA star Jalen Brunson leading the roster. Stevenson's girls' water polo and gymnastics programs are perennial powers with multiple state championships.
