Wilmington sits right on the Kankakee River in southern Will County, and the river is the heart of the place. Islands and riverfront parks give the downtown a laid-back, water-town feel that is rare this close to Chicago, and locals fish, paddle, and gather along the banks all summer. The historic downtown along Water Street is genuinely walkable, lined with antique shops, cafes, and small businesses, the kind of Main Street that still feels like a community rather than a strip mall.
Wilmington is also a bucket-list stop on old Route 66, home of the Gemini Giant, the towering green spaceman that has greeted road-trippers for generations. That Route 66 identity, plus the river, gives the area a distinct sense of character and pride you feel the moment you arrive.
For buyers, the appeal is space and value with real connectivity. Interstate 55 runs right past town, so the commute to Joliet is short and Chicago is a straight shot up the highway, while housing skews toward affordable single-family homes on generous lots. Families are drawn by the small-district feel of Wilmington 209U and by Friday-night football that regularly ends in the state finals. If you want a genuine small-town lifestyle with river access, Route 66 charm, and an easy path to the metro, Wilmington delivers.

The school
Secondary education in Wilmington traces back to September 1872, when a girls high school class was organized in one of the town schools and a boys class followed almost immediately. The modern district took shape in 1949, when Wilmington and Lorenzo merged to form the 209U district, and a new high school building was constructed in 1953. Today Wilmington High School serves the city as the four-year public high school of Wilmington Community Unit School District 209U, competing as the Wildcats in purple and white.
Wilmington competes as the Wildcats in the Illinois Central Eight Conference, and football is the school's marquee program. Per official IHSA records the Wildcats have won four state football championships, capturing three of them in a five-year span in the 2020s and cementing Wilmington as one of the strongest small-school programs in the state.
