@todaysmodernmomLiving near Richmond-Burton HS
Living near Richmond-Burton means settling into one of the most relaxed corners of McHenry County, right up against the Illinois and Wisconsin border. The village of Richmond is a genuine small town with a walkable, historic downtown full of antique shops, local cafes, and restored 1800s storefronts. It has the kind of Main Street charm that is getting harder to find this close to a major metro, and it is still only about 65 miles from Chicago.
The real draw out here is the water and the open space. You are minutes from the Chain O'Lakes and the Nippersink Creek corridor, with boating, fishing, and Chain O'Lakes State Park all part of everyday life. Routes 12 and 31 give you straightforward drives south toward Fox Lake, McHenry, and Crystal Lake, where you pick up more shopping, dining, and Metra service into the city. Neighboring towns like Spring Grove, Solon Mills, and the Burton Township countryside round out the district, mixing established village homes with larger lots and acreage.
Housing here leans toward space and value: older village homes near downtown Richmond, newer subdivisions, and rural properties with room for a workshop, a garden, or a few animals. It is a popular choice for buyers who want a quieter, lake-country lifestyle and a tight-knit school community while keeping the option of commuting toward the northwest suburbs.

The school
Richmond-Burton Community High School is a four-year public high school in Richmond, Illinois, serving grades 9 through 12 in McHenry County near the Illinois and Wisconsin border.
