@huntleyparkdistrictLiving near Oak Forest HS
Living near Oak Forest High School means settling into one of the greenest pockets of southwest Cook County. The city grew up around a Rock Island Railroad whistle stop in a stand of timber, and by the 1880s the abundance of oak trees had given the area its name. That heritage still shapes daily life: Oak Forest is largely ringed by Cook County Forest Preserves, so mature trees, walking paths, and open space are part of the everyday backdrop rather than a weekend destination.
The commute is one of the area's quiet advantages. The Oak Forest Metra station sits at 159th and Cicero on the Rock Island District line, which runs between Joliet and LaSalle Street Station in the Chicago Loop, so getting downtown without a car is genuinely easy. Cicero Avenue carries the everyday errands and local shopping, while the surrounding street grid stays calm and residential just a block or two off the main roads.
For families, the draw is straightforward: an established south-suburban community with classic Midwestern housing stock, abundant green space, a real commuter-rail connection, and Oak Forest High School anchoring the area as part of Bremen Community High School District 228. It is a place that feels settled and rooted, which is exactly what its name has promised for well over a century.

The school
In March 1968, taxpayers of District 228 approved a loan from the Illinois School Building Commission to begin first-phase construction of the district's fourth high school, and the board approved the name that August. Oak Forest High School opened in 1971 to relieve overcrowding at the district's three existing high schools, but enrollment kept growing and a building-expansion bond passed in December 1971. A 1985 fire damaged the school's electrical systems and forced students to temporarily attend split-shift classes at Tinley Park High School, and a 2005 project added a new instructional materials center.
The school's motto is Academics plus Activities equal Excellence. In 2007, Oak Forest posted an average ACT score of 21.2 and graduated 97.3 percent of its senior class. More recently the school has run a student-to-teacher ratio of about 15 to 1 with an average class size in the low 20s.
Oak Forest competes in the South Suburban Conference as the Bengals and takes part in IHSA state tournaments across a full slate of boys and girls sports. The school has won IHSA state championships in baseball in 1985 and softball in 2009.

Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
