Living near North Chicago HS

The area, not just the school

North Chicago sits right on Lake Michigan in southeastern Lake County, tucked just below Waukegan and a short drive from Gurnee. It is one of the more affordable and genuinely diverse places to plant roots on the North Shore corridor, with solid brick bungalows, mid-century ranches, and starter homes priced well under what you will find in the pricier lakefront suburbs to the south. If you want proximity to the lake and quick access to the region's biggest job centers without a North Shore price tag, this is a value pocket worth a serious look.

The location is the real story here. North Chicago is home to Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy's only boot camp, and to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and it sits right next door to the large Abbott and AbbVie campuses in the area. That means a steady base of employers, students, and military families. Commuting is easy: two Metra Union Pacific North Line stations run south to downtown Chicago's Ogilvie Transportation Center and north toward Kenosha, and Route 41 and I-94 put the whole region within reach by car.

Day to day, you get a working, unpretentious community with real convenience. Gurnee Mills and Six Flags Great America are minutes away, the Lake County Forest Preserves give you green space, and the lakefront is right there. For buyers who want affordability, a short commute to major Lake County employers, and a spot near the water, North Chicago delivers a lot for the money.

About North Chicago Community High School

North Chicago Community High School was established in 1954. Before it was built, local high school students had to attend Waukegan High School in the neighboring city of Waukegan. Because of its proximity to Naval Station Great Lakes, the school serves many military families, which contributes to a higher-than-average student mobility rate. The building includes a 750-seat auditorium, a library, fine arts facilities, a 450-seat cafeteria, two gyms, and a chemistry lab added in 1997.

North Chicago Community High School offers a range of Advanced Placement and Honors courses and staffs four guidance counselors plus a dedicated college and university counselor. The school is a member of the Lake County High Schools Tech Campus at the College of Lake County, which lets students earn career-based, college-level training and combined high school and college credits. It also hosts a local branch of the I Have a Dream Foundation, which supports a cohort of students from grade school through college planning.

North Chicago competes in the Northern Lake County Conference and the Illinois High School Association as the Warhawks. The school fields teams across all three seasons, including football, cross country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, bowling, track and field, volleyball, and tennis.
