Living in the Ridgewood area means settling into Norridge, the little village neighbors call the Island Within a City. Norridge and its eastern twin, Harwood Heights, sit as an enclave completely surrounded by the city of Chicago, which gives the area a rare combination: small-village government and services on one side, big-city amenities a few minutes away on the other. The whole village is only about 1.8 square miles, so it feels compact and knowable, with modest single-family homes on tidy blocks and a population of just over 15,000.

The character here is settled and family-friendly, with a lot of longtime owners. The median age skews a bit older, which tells you something: these are well-kept homes people tend to stay in, not a churn-and-flip market. Norridge also borders the Cook County forest preserves, so green space is close at hand, and the neighborly feel is real.

Getting around is straightforward. Both Pace and CTA buses serve the village, connecting residents to Chicago transit and the wider region, and the surrounding street grid along Montrose, Irving Park, and Cumberland feeds quickly onto the Northwest Side and toward the expressways. The Ridgewood district itself pulls from Norridge, Harwood Heights, and the unincorporated part of Norwood Park Township, so the same easygoing, close-in-to-Chicago feel carries across the school's attendance area.
