Marengo sits at the quiet western edge of McHenry County, about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and roughly 30 miles east of Rockford, right along the Kishwaukee River. It is a real small town with a real downtown: brick storefronts, local churches, Settlers Days in the summer, and the kind of pace where people still wave from the porch. The Marengo Ridge conservation area just north of town gives you woods and trails that most Chicago suburbs would envy.
Housing here leans affordable and varied. You will find century-old homes near the old downtown, mid-century ranches, and newer subdivisions on the edges of town, often on bigger lots than you would get closer to the city. Land is part of the draw, with working farms and acreage parcels still surrounding the city limits.
The trade-off is the commute. Marengo is a drive-first town: I-90 is the main artery toward the northwest suburbs and O'Hare, and there is no in-town Metra stop, so train commuters typically drive to a station to the east. For buyers who want square footage, elbow room, and a genuine community feel, Marengo delivers a lot of house and a lot of quiet for the money.

The school
Marengo Community High School traces its roots to 1924, when the original Marengo High School building opened to serve the city of Marengo and the surrounding farm country of southwestern McHenry County. That building was expanded repeatedly over the decades, and in August 2004 the district opened a new campus of roughly 210,000 square feet next door at 110 Franks Road, with science labs, a large gymnasium, and an auditorium. The 1924 structure was repurposed and today serves the district's younger grades.
Marengo Community High School is the lone high school in District 154 and offers a college-prep curriculum that includes Advanced Placement coursework alongside career and technical programs. The campus was purpose-built in 2004 with seven science labs, vocational spaces, and a media center to support hands-on and college-track learning.
Marengo competes as the Indians in the Kishwaukee River Conference, wearing maroon and white. The school fields the full slate of IHSA sports, and its softball program reached the top of the state in 2017 with a Class 3A championship.
