@nicolefromchicagoLiving near Johnsburg HS
Living in and around Johnsburg means trading the rush of the suburbs for the easy rhythm of a Fox River town. This corner of McHenry County sits right at the edge of the Chain O'Lakes, so boating, fishing, and lazy summer weekends on the water are part of everyday life here, not a once-a-year getaway. Homes range from established lake-access neighborhoods and ranches on roomy lots to newer construction, and you get genuine elbow room. The village still has that semi-rural, small-town feel where neighbors know each other and the pace is unhurried. Route 31 keeps you connected, and nearby McHenry adds the grocery runs, restaurants, and shopping you want close at hand.
For families, the draw is real: a close-knit Johnsburg District 12 community feeding into the high school, plus quick access to the river and parks for kids to actually be outside. Commuters appreciate that the McHenry Metra station on the Union Pacific Northwest line is just down the road for the run into Chicago, while Crystal Lake and Fox Lake are short drives for more amenities. If you are looking for a place with lake-country character, solid value compared to the closer-in suburbs, and a strong sense of community, the Johnsburg area is worth a serious look.

The school
Johnsburg High School opened in 1978 to serve grades 9-12 for Johnsburg Community Unit School District 12, which covers Johnsburg, Ringwood, and small portions of McHenry, Pistakee Highlands, and Spring Grove. The surrounding community traces its roots to 1841, when German immigrant families from the Eifel region settled the area and founded the parish known today as St. John the Baptist. Enrollment at the high school peaked near 907 students during the 2009-2010 school year before settling closer to 500 in recent years.
Johnsburg offers a range of coursework including honors and Advanced Placement classes across art, music, business, and foreign languages, plus a strong vocational track with graphics, computer-aided design, welding, heavy diesel, and machine tool technology. Students who complete the heavy diesel program can earn a commercial driver's license. The school reports an AP participation rate around 36% and a graduation rate of roughly 89%.
The Skyhawks compete in the Kishwaukee River Conference and have a strong small-school athletic tradition. The 2016 football team finished state runner-up in Class 4A, and the girls soccer program earned IHSA state trophies in 2013 and 2017. The school fields a full slate of boys and girls programs plus a co-ed bass fishing team.
