Homewood and Flossmoor are a pair of established south suburbs that sit about 22 to 24 miles due south of downtown Chicago, and they have the kind of settled, tree-lined character that newer subdivisions simply cannot manufacture. You will find a rich mix of housing here, from historic early-century homes and stately properties near the golf clubs to comfortable mid-century ranches and Cape Cods on quiet streets, often at prices that feel approachable compared to the north and west suburbs. Flossmoor in particular grew up around its country clubs in the 1920s, and that legacy still shows in its leafy streets and gracious lots.
The commute is one of the area's biggest draws. Both villages sit on the Metra Electric District main line, with their own stations in Homewood and Flossmoor that carry riders to Millennium Station in the Loop, generally in under an hour. Homewood's recently rebuilt station anchors a walkable downtown full of local shops and restaurants, while Flossmoor's downtown station puts the same easy access right at the village's doorstep. For households where someone works in the city but wants real yard space and a true neighborhood, this rail access is the difference-maker.
Lifestyle here leans green and community-minded. The Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve offers nearly 193 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and prairie with a scenic loop trail just minutes from downtown Homewood, and golf is woven into the area's identity through clubs like Flossmoor Country Club, which dates to 1899 and once hosted the 1920 PGA Championship. Add in a genuinely diverse and welcoming community feel, and you have two towns that pair big-city access with a grounded, neighborly way of life.

The school
Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School opened in 1959 with 1,170 students and 51 classrooms, serving the south Chicago suburbs of Homewood and Flossmoor. As enrollment nearly doubled by 1965, the campus grew through a series of additions, and in 1971 the North Building and fieldhouse opened when the student population topped 4,000. Today the spread-out campus is organized into North and South Buildings, with the South Building containing lettered sub-buildings that house the school's WHFH 88.5 FM radio station, a television studio, a swimming pool, gymnasium, science building, and performing arts center.
Homewood-Flossmoor High School is a three-time U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award winner (1983, 1996, 2002) and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's best high schools. The mall-style campus is divided into North and South Buildings connected by lettered sub-buildings, and it offers a deep slate of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate coursework, having graduated its first IB diploma class in 2015. Arts are a hallmark, with a large share of students enrolled in at least one of more than 50 arts courses, and the school posts a graduation rate of roughly 97 percent.
H-F competes as the Vikings in the Southwest Suburban Conference under the IHSA. The program reached a historic peak in March 2024 when the boys' basketball team won the IHSA Class 4A state championship, capping a long basketball tradition that previously produced a 2004 state runner-up finish led by future NBA first-round pick Julian Wright. The school holds deep championship pedigree, with the girls' golf team having won six state titles, and its drama program holds the state record with 17 titles.

Thinking of selling?
Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
