Maine East sits right at the seam of Park Ridge and Des Plaines, two established northwest suburbs that grew up along the old Metra rail line into Chicago. The school stands at Dempster Street and Potter Road, a few minutes from downtown Des Plaines and the riverfront parks and trails that follow the Des Plaines River, plus the kind of walkable main street with shops and restaurants buyers keep asking for. The Union Pacific Northwest Metra line gets you to Ogilvie in downtown Chicago in well under an hour, which is a big part of why so many commuters settle here.
The housing stock leans toward classic midcentury brick ranches, Georgians, and Cape Cods on tree-lined streets, with pockets of newer construction and bigger renovations as families trade up without leaving the district. The other thing buyers always raise is O'Hare. The district sits right next to O'Hare International Airport at the hub of the expressways, with sections of I-90, I-190, and I-294 inside its boundaries, so it is hard to beat for anyone who flies for work or wants an easy ride to either the airport or downtown.

The school
Maine East opened in 1929 as Maine Township High School, replacing an earlier 1902 building, and it remained the only high school in the district until Maine West opened in 1959. The building is known for its Art Deco style, with an L-shaped original structure and a six-story tower whose upper balcony offers a distant view of the Chicago skyline on clear days. During the Great Depression, much of the staff taught without pay because the district could not meet salaries, and local merchants supplied them with necessities free of charge. In 1936 its band director founded the music honor society that grew into today's Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Maine East offers 18 Advanced Placement courses, spanning English language and literature, biology, environmental science, chemistry, physics, calculus, statistics, computer science, Spanish, history, government, economics, music theory, and studio art. The school has been ranked among the top 1,500 U.S. public high schools on Newsweek's Challenge Index, and it has a long tradition in policy debate.
Maine East competes as the Blue Demons in the Central Suburban League, where it has played since 1972 after leaving the West Suburban Conference. The school's deepest historical traditions are in boys swimming and diving, which won five state titles in the 1930s, along with baseball, boys cross country, and gymnastics. The IHSA also recognized the school's policy debate teams as state champions in 1972, 1980, and 1981.

Thinking of selling?
Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
