How Burbank got here
A bit of history.
The land that became Burbank was rolled into Lyons Township in 1850 and stayed almost entirely agricultural well into the twentieth century. Real estate developers began buying up farmland in the 1920s and platting subdivisions, but chronic drainage problems, the absence of municipal water and sewer service, and the Great Depression kept construction stalled until after World War II. Postwar demand finally pushed the area, then known as South Stickney or Burbank Manor, into rapid buildout. By 1960 the local population had climbed to 20,720, nearly triple what it had been a decade earlier.
Creation of the South Stickney Sanitary District in 1952 was the turning point, and by 1959 the area had a working water and sewer system for the first time. Residents incorporated as a city on April 4, 1970, partly to resist annexation by Chicago, and named the new municipality after Luther Burbank Elementary School, which had served the area since the 1930s. Population peaked at 29,448 in 1976 and has stayed in the high 20,000s ever since. The city operates under an Aldermanic-City form of government with a mayor, clerk, treasurer, and seven aldermen.
