Living near King College Prep
Kenwood is one of Chicago's grand old lakefront neighborhoods, and living here means waking up among some of the most beautiful architecture on the South Side. Tree-lined streets are dotted with stately mansions, vintage greystones, Prairie School masterpieces, and Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes, many dating to the late 1800s when the area drew the city's wealthiest families. The southern stretch sits within the landmarked Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District, so the character is protected and enduring. Just to the east, Lake Michigan defines daily life: Promontory Point delivers sweeping skyline and water views and connects to the miles-long Lakefront Trail.
Location is a big part of the appeal here. Kenwood sits directly north of Hyde Park, putting the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the cultural energy of the campus within easy reach, while historic Bronzeville borders the community to the north and west. Commuters love the Metra Electric Line and Lake Shore Drive, both offering a quick and reliable path to downtown, complemented by nearby CTA bus and Green Line service. It is a rare combination: a quiet, established, architecturally significant enclave that still keeps you minutes from the lake, the Loop, and world-class institutions.

The school
King College Prep opened in 1971 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School, a neighborhood high school dedicated to the slain civil rights leader by Mayor Richard J. Daley in October 1971. The school grew out of the former Forrestville High School, founded in 1964, as enrollment in the surrounding Kenwood, Grand Boulevard, and Oakland communities outstripped that older building. During the 2000-2001 school year the school converted to a selective-enrollment magnet and was renamed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. College Preparatory High School, requiring students to apply for admission based on academic achievement and test scores.
King is one of Chicago Public Schools' ten selective-enrollment high schools, so admission is competitive and based on academic records and entrance test scores. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered in every subject area, with college coursework available through university partners and advanced tracks in the visual and performing arts, including band, dance, drama, graphic arts, and vocal music.
King competes in the Chicago Public League and is best known for boys basketball. Under legendary coach Landon 'Sonny' Cox, the Jaguars won three IHSA Class AA state championships and produced multiple Illinois Mr. Basketball honorees and nationally ranked teams, including an undefeated 32-0 title team in 1990.
