Living near Jones College Prep
Jones College Prep sits in the heart of the South Loop and historic Printer's Row, one of the most walkable corners of downtown Chicago. This is the old publishing district, where turn-of-the-century brick printing houses like the Franklin Building and the landmark Dearborn Station have been reborn as timber-beam residential lofts, sitting shoulder to shoulder with sleek modern high-rises. You can walk to a real neighborhood feel here: independent bookshops, coffee spots, and the beloved Printers Row Lit Fest that takes over Dearborn Street every June, all steps from the skyscrapers of the Loop.
Transit is a major selling point. The CTA Red Line at Harrison and the Blue Line at LaSalle are both within a short walk, and Metra commuters have quick access to the downtown terminals, so getting anywhere in the city or the suburbs is easy without a car. State Street and Michigan Avenue keep dining, shopping, and nightlife close.
What sets this area apart is the green space and the lakefront. Grant Park, the Museum Campus with the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium, and miles of the Lakefront Trail are all within reach. Housing runs the full range, from character-rich converted lofts with exposed brick and huge windows to full-amenity glass high-rises with skyline and lake views, which makes this a flexible spot for first-time buyers, downsizers, and families alike.

The school
Jones was established in 1938 as Jones Commercial High School after the Chicago Board of Education determined the growing downtown needed its own high school, and it is named for William Jones, the city's first school superintendent. The school shifted focus over the decades, from business and commerce to academics, adopting its current name and college-preparatory mission in August 1998. In 2013 Jones opened a new seven-story building next to the original campus, a project the Chicago Sun-Times reported cost more than 100 million dollars, making it the most expensive school the city had ever built.
Jones is one of 11 selective-enrollment high schools in Chicago Public Schools, admitting academically high-achieving students based on grades and entrance-exam scores. The school has a strong Advanced Placement culture, with U.S. News reporting an AP participation rate around 89 percent, and it consistently ranks among the top public high schools in Illinois. Its four-year graduation rate is roughly 94 percent, well above the state average.
Jones College Prep competes in the Chicago Public League and is a member of the IHSA. The boys cross country program has been the school's standout, capturing an IHSA Class 2A state team title in 2012.
